There are few things I find as beautifully striking as hearing the melodies of familiar hymns waft in through my open living room window on a sunny afternoon breeze as they are chimed in the bell tower of the Catholic church down the block. Above the swishing sounds of the busy streets, they ring out the sweet strains of "Oh Savior, Thou Who Wearest a Crown" and "Beautiful Savior." It is so quietly breathtaking.

Hearing the church bells chime was one of my favorite things of living in Germany and Austria. There's something just charming about it, a reminder of simpler times.
