the baby who mistook his mother for an ice cream cone

Every time I hold Garrett up against my shoulder, he goes to town on my shoulder, like I'm the most delicious chocolatey ice cream cone ever or something. Maybe I'm made of sugar...? Whatever it is, I must be pretty tasty.

Actually, he thinks everything's pretty tasty: my shoulder, Blake, the bib of his overalls, his silky blanket, his fingers, his bathwater. You name it, he licks it. And he apparently also likes it.

Funny boy.

Beginning tonight we'll get to find out if he also likes licking his grandparents. My dad is flying in this evening for a conference in the city, and tomorrow night my mom will be joining us as well. I'm excited to see them! And I'm really excited to get to share Garrett. He has so many new tricks to show off since Grandma Nancy last saw him shortly after he was born. Grandpa Dave hasn't even met him yet, so this will be extra fun.

The plan is that Mom, Garrett, and I will hang around the neighborhood during the last part of the week, while Blake and Dad get down to business in the city. Then we'll all take a train up to Massachusetts to spend Conference Weekend with my aunt and uncle and the glorious autumn leaves of New England. I've never seen New England, let alone in the fall, so this should be pretty great.

So if you don't hear from me for a few days, just know that we're having a wild time -- which I'll of course be sure to fill you in on once we're back.

Mia loves my shoulder, too! If I don't have a spit rag covering it, I will inevitably end up with a wet spot the size of a basketball. Enjoy conference weekend in New England! I bet it's beautiful!

As my mom always says, what's a little drool among friends? What a cutie.

Sounds like a great time with family and pretty fall colors - doesn't get much better than that! If you could pass along the message to the trees in New England to stay gorgeous for another 2.5 weeks, I'd appreciate it.

We finally booked our hotel, so I'll be emailing you soon to arrange meeting you and Garrett. Hee hee!

Just wait until he can grab things. Lyncoln just this week pooh in the tub and ate it. I was very worried about her getting sick. Come to find out that your own pooh doesn't make you too sick. Thank goodness but it still grossed me out. Have fun this weekend with your parents in town. Tell them hi for me.

Ok, that last comment made me kind of sick. What I was going to say, though, is have so much fun with your parents!

Hey, Lindsay... So, this doesn't really have much to do with your post, at least in specifics...and I'm not sure if this will be funny or will just make me seem creepy...because I've never actually met you...

But I dreamed last night that I came and visited you in New York. And that Garrett was astounding the world in general by speaking in complete sentences. I thought that was pretty great. So I thought I'd tell you that your child is performing wonders not only in his own life, but in the dream-realities of blogger friends.

Hope your parents' visit is fab!

Lizardbreath - that is too funny! Of course, I always thought he was a brilliant baby, but wow! :) And you know, if you're ever in New York, you're welcome to come see us. It'd be fun to meet. :)

And speaking of meeting, Kristeee - I can't wait! Oh, and I'll do my best to instruct those New England leaves to stay colorful for you. :)

Have always wanted to go back east in the fall. Maybe someday.

If it's any consolation, my nephew grabs at your face when you hold him. Never seen a kid so fascinated with someone's nose, eyes, mouth, etc.

Lindsay this is so true! My baby has a constant and rather inpulsive seeming desire to have all things in his mouth. Now that he is reaching for things... he reaches, he pulls, he puts it in his mouth.

I hope you have a great weekend!!

oh Lindsay I'm so excited you get to see your mom. It made it almost bearable to go to cards club without her there knowing she was with you. Tell your parents hello for me--this weekend we are officially trying out the wonderful pot-belly stove in the basement. I hope its cold outside! Any advice? Make sure to post pics of all your travels! I'll be in New York a week from Saturday--but Palmyra so not close. Hope you have a great week!

Wow. You always seem like you keep so busy! That's enviable! You live right in the city, or a bit outside?

And Zara likes to lick everything too nowadays.

Hi! I just came across your blog and this post - my 5 m.o. son ALSO loves to lick things, especially when he goes to sleep. For this reason, I'm hoping you can advise me if you put your son down with anything - a blanket, lovie - for naps. I used to put my son in the swing in a blanket, and he'd soothe himself by turning and licking the blanket next to him. But now he's doing crib naps, and I'm afraid to put anything in with him in case he suffocates, but it's so sad to see him furiously licking the sheet.....

Hi tbd, and welcome! I'd post this reply directly to your blog (if you have one), but I'm not able to get to it, so hopefully you find my response here.

I've been putting Garrett down in his crib with his lovey since he was about 3 months old. With him, I've never been too worried about him suffocating since he's strong enough to move his head if he needs to. Now that h's 6 months old and ever-nearing the teething stage, he sucks on anything he can get his hands on, whether I gave it to him or not. If you think your son's neck is sufficiently strong, I wouldn't, at 5 months of age, worry about giving him something to lick...especially if it soothes him to sleep.
